The almohades reformers coming from the High Western Atlas took Marrakech in 1147. They destroyed its palaces and its mosques because they judged that they were too much Spanish. However with their new dignity of caliph and their increased empire, this dynasty “did not have courage to do without beauty” and it is with it that the Moslem civilization of Spain was spread in North Africa : Andalusian thinkers and philosophers such as Ibn Tofayl and Averroes, an architecture which will fix the form of the minarets of the Maghreb, and the construction of vast cities.
In the 12th century, the son of Abd-El-Moumen : Youssef undertook the construction of the Kasbah which
will be completed by its successor Yacoub El-Mansour and will be the first and the most perfect example of a city of empire in Morocco.
In the North : the military city, in the South : the administrative city, in the East : palaces and gardens. Fés will take as a starting point this plan. There only remains little from the almohade Kasbah, because the Mérinides which had chosen Fés as a capital used its materials, the Saadiens transformed it to build the palace EL BADI and the Alaouites built palaces there. Only the minaret made of brick and green earthenware of the
Yacoub-El-Man-sour Mosque reached us, it will inspire many artists in the following centuries. |
